Wells Fargo Advances Tokenized Deposits for Corporate Clients, Builds on Cosmos and Pursues "WFUSD"
Wells Fargo is stepping up its push into tokenized deposits with a multi-track strategy spanning proprietary development, an industry consortium, and a new trademark filing.
The bank is working with JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America and Citigroup on a shared tokenized deposit network slated to go live in the first half of 2027. The project aims to enable 24/7 settlement and add programmable functionality to bank deposits using distributed ledger technology, while staying within existing regulatory frameworks and remaining compatible with legacy core banking systems.
Separately, Wells Fargo is developing its own tokenized deposit engine on the Cosmos blockchain protocol, which is designed for interoperability across multiple blockchains. The bank is also participating in a Swift pilot launched in July 2026 involving 17 global banks to build a blockchain-based ledger for cross-border tokenized deposit transfers.
Wells Fargo has additionally filed a trademark for "WFUSD" in March 2026. The filing covers services including digital asset tokenization, payment processing and trading, and the name suggests a deposit-token product positioned against U.S. dollar-denominated stablecoins.
A key distinction is issuer liability and protections: tokenized deposits remain bank deposits backed by the issuing bank and subject to existing regulatory safeguards, while stablecoins are typically backed by reserves managed by a private company.
By issuing tokenized deposits, banks can offer crypto-style speed and programmability while keeping activity within the regulated banking perimeter. Potential use cases include conditional payments, escrow releases tied to contract terms, and supply-chain payments executed upon delivery.
The consortium network is not expected until the first half of 2027. As of August 2026, public detail on Wells Fargo's standalone rollout of a proprietary blockchain solution for corporate clients remains limited, with the emphasis continuing on consortium efforts and development on Cosmos.
