U.S. Senators Warren, Blumenthal Urge SEC Probe Into Trump "TRUMP" Meme Coin
Democratic Senators Elizabeth Warren and Richard Blumenthal have asked the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to open an investigation into former President Donald Trump's "TRUMP" meme coin, seeking to determine whether the project involves fraud or improper enrichment, CNN reported.
In a letter to SEC Chair Paul Atkins, the senators said the token project "may constitute an illegal scam" and pressed the agency to examine whether it entails "illegal fraudulent activity or facilitates improper gains." Their request centers on whether the project resembles a crypto-industry "rug pull."
The lawmakers argued that even absent an abrupt withdrawal of funds, the token could still amount to a "soft rug pull" if market support is gradually removed in a way that leaves investors bearing losses. They urged the SEC to assess potential fraud risks tied to the TRUMP meme coin and to act to prevent further investor harm.
The SEC has not commented.
