Strategy CEO Phong Le Opens Door to Bitcoin Sales to Bolster Balance Sheet

Strategy CEO Phong Le offered an unusually direct view of the company's dependence on Bitcoin on a recent earnings call: the business tends to excel when Bitcoin rallies and can face volatility when it doesn't. What drew the market's attention was his added message that Strategy is prepared to sell Bitcoin if doing so would strengthen the balance sheet or improve key financial metrics. The stance marks a notable shift for a firm long defined by a "never sell" posture. Strategy—renamed from MicroStrategy in February 2025—has been a symbol of corporate Bitcoin maximalism, with roughly $65 billion in Bitcoin on its books. Le said on the May 2026 earnings call that the company's top priority is now increasing Bitcoin per share. In practice, that could mean reducing holdings if it improves per-share outcomes. The company has also been building liquidity. Strategy raised about $466.7 million through equity offerings, lifting cash reserves to around $3 billion. Unlike prior periods, it has not immediately funneled the proceeds into additional Bitcoin purchases. Holding more cash gives Strategy flexibility to cover operating costs, meet servicing obligations, and pay preferred dividends on its STRC perpetual preferred stock, which carries an annualized yield of about 11.5%. Le, who has served as CEO since 2022 after roles as CFO and COO, signaled a more balance-sheet-driven approach. For investors, Strategy stock has effectively functioned as a leveraged proxy for Bitcoin. Le acknowledged that the shares tend to lag in bear markets and outperform in bull markets. The combination of a potential Bitcoin-selling option and cash stockpiling adds a new variable, suggesting the company may act rather than absorb a full drawdown without adjustment. As the most prominent corporate Bitcoin holder, Strategy's moves can influence how other firms approach treasury policy. If the focus on optimizing Bitcoin per share gains broader adoption, it could reshape corporate crypto playbooks toward shareholder value and conventional financial metrics rather than accumulation at any cost.
