Why Sugar Prices Are Rising in India: Tight Supply and a Rare Import Move

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
Indian domestic sugar prices have surged on weather-driven cane yield declines, tightening near-term supply. The government's approval of a 1 million-tonne zero-duty raw sugar import quota—the first in a decade—signals active intervention to cap inflation, but also underscores immediate scarcity. For global soft-commodity markets, the news is supportive for sugar pricing while increasing focus on monsoon variability and policy-driven import flows.

Sugar prices in India have jumped more than 15% over the past month, with retail rates moving above 60 rupees per kilogram and up more than 20% from a year earlier. Flooding in some areas and insufficient rainfall in others have hurt sugarcane yields, tightening supply. To cool domestic prices, the Indian government has approved duty-free imports of 1 million tonnes of raw sugar, the first such zero-tariff import decision in nearly a decade.
