Hanwha shifts U.S. shipbuilding push south and west with proposed $1+ billion Austal USA deal
Hanwha Group, which bought Hanwha Philly Shipyard for $100 million in 2024, is shifting its U.S. investment focus toward the South and West. The company has proposed paying more than $1 billion for Austal USA’s shipyard in Mobile, Alabama, nearby nuclear-submarine fabrication sites, and a ship-repair facility in San Diego. Hanwha had pledged $5 billion to expand its Philadelphia facilities, but it has said it has lost money on a $1.7 billion program that began in 2021.
