U.S. Weighs Fresh Trade Measures on Canada as Tariff Row Intensifies

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
The U.S. weighing additional trade sanctions against Canada after Ottawa announced 15%–50% retaliatory tariffs on roughly $20B of U.S. goods signals rising North American trade friction. Escalation risk increases uncertainty for cross-border supply chains, industrial inputs (notably steel), and corporate margins, potentially tightening financial conditions and supporting defensive positioning. Near-term market focus is on whether negotiations break down and how broad any additional U.S. tariff measures become.

Huoxing Finance reported that on August 26, the Trump administration is weighing additional trade sanctions against Canada after Canadian Prime Minister Carney unveiled retaliatory steps in response to new U.S. tariffs. A White House official said Washington is expected to answer Canada's latest move, and that options on the table include higher tariffs and other trade actions. The official added that President Trump has a broad set of tools available if U.S.-Canada trade talks collapse. Canada announced on Monday that it will levy tariffs ranging from 15% to 50% on roughly $20 billion of U.S. goods, including an increase in the tariff on U.S. steel products to 50% from 25%. The Canadian government said that starting September 8 it will apply retaliatory tariffs of 15%, 25% or 50% on about 700 products.
