U.S. equities enter a seasonal danger zone, with August–October set to test the rally
AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
U.S. equities are entering a historically weak August–October seasonality window after new highs, raising near-term correction risk. Ned Davis Research argues seasonality alone is unlikely to break the uptrend given improved breadth, cautious-but-stabilizing sentiment, strong earnings beats, and equity-favoring allocation signals. However, the unusual combination of a rising S&P 500 and rising VIX highlights growing fragility around crowded AI positioning, options hedging dynamics, and elevated valuations.

ME News reported on Aug. 5 (UTC+8) that U.S. stocks, fresh off new all-time highs, are moving into a historically softer stretch for risk assets. Ned Davis Research (NDR) cycle models show August through October have typically been the S&P 500’s weakest three-month window, putting a potential near-term pullback back on investors’ radar.
NDR argues seasonality alone is unlikely to derail the broader trend. The firm points to still-cautious sentiment, improving market breadth, and asset-allocation signals that continue to lean toward equities. NDR’s model currently recommends a 70% stock allocation, above its 55% benchmark.
Fundamentals also remain supportive, led by earnings. Roughly 300 S&P 500 constituents have reported so far, with 85% beating expectations, and aggregate profit growth is projected to exceed 47%. NDR says U.S. equities can still grind higher as long as the U.S. economy holds up and AI-driven investment continues to lift corporate earnings.
Positioning and sentiment are adding fuel as well. NDR data show short-term trading sentiment slipped into "extremely pessimistic" levels in early August before rebounding to neutral. Historically, such extremes often coincide with selling pressure nearing exhaustion, setting the stage for renewed inflows into stocks.
AI-linked trading is also regaining traction. As mega-cap tech rebounds, investors have been rebuilding call-option exposure, while market makers buy stocks to hedge, reinforcing the rally through a positive feedback loop.
Still, risks are building. A notable recent development is the rare combination of the S&P 500 and the VIX volatility index rising at the same time. On Tuesday, the S&P 500 gained 1.8%—its biggest one-day advance since April—while the VIX rose 2.9% to 16.47. Analysts caution that if stocks and volatility continue to climb together, it could signal the market is nearing a key inflection point. Crowded AI positioning, heavy options exposure, and elevated valuations could amplify swings if sentiment turns. (Source: BlockBeats)
