Japan deploys a record $96.4 billion to defend the yen in largest-ever one-month intervention

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
Japan's Ministry of Finance disclosed a record 15.4T yen ($96.4B) spent over a month to support JPY after it fell to a 40-year low, with confirmed U.S.-backed coordinated intervention. The scale and willingness to re-enter the market raises event risk for USDJPY and broader FX volatility by tightening perceived limits on speculative JPY weakness, potentially impacting global rates-sensitive positioning and risk hedging.

Japan carried out a record-scale currency intervention over the past month, spending $96.4 billion to support the yen after it slid to a 40-year low, ME News reported on Aug. 28 (UTC+8). Figures released Friday by Japan's Ministry of Finance show the government spent 15.4 trillion yen intervening in the foreign-exchange market between July 30 and Aug. 26, the largest one-month total on record. The operation was backed by the United States, a move seen as a further warning to speculators betting on renewed yen weakness. In early August, Japan's Finance Minister Kako Kato and U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent confirmed coordinated intervention took place on July 31 and said they are prepared to return to the market without hesitation if needed. Japan's published figures do not include the U.S. contribution, which is expected to be smaller in size but viewed as carrying outsized symbolic weight. (Finanshijie; Source: ODAILY)
