Haruko's targeted cyberattack, which exposed client access tokens and readonly exchange API credentials across 15 institutional clients, reinforces operational and counterparty risk in crypto market infrastructure. Even with limited reported fund losses and a patched vulnerability, the incident may prompt tighter exchange/API controls, accelerated security audits, and heightened caution among smaller funds with weaker controls, weighing on near-term risk appetite across liquid crypto markets.

London-based institutional crypto technology provider Haruko was hit by a targeted cyberattack earlier this week, according to CoinDesk, with 15 clients affected. The attackers exploited a weakness in Haruko's infrastructure to obtain user access tokens, which enabled access to clients' read-only exchange API credentials and transaction data. A small amount of client funds was stolen, with smaller hedge funds facing greater risk due to weaker security controls.
Haruko co-founder and CTO Adam Carlile said the incident specifically targeted the company. The vulnerability has been patched, and Haruko said it plans to publish a full technical postmortem. Haruko serves more than 80 institutional clients worldwide and connects to over 100 centralized exchanges and 30 blockchains.
