FIIs reshuffle their bank bets, trimming India's biggest lenders. Will the heavyweight names make a comeback?

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
FIIs cut holdings in major Indian banks in FY27 Q1 (HDFC, Axis, ICICI), while adding only to Federal Bank, signaling softer near-term foreign risk appetite toward the banking sector. This contrasts with a strong July rebound in the Nifty (+16%), implying a divergence between headline index strength and financials-specific positioning. Near-term volatility may increase around Indian financials and index composition sensitivity.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) cut exposure to India's leading bank stocks sharply in Q1 of FY27. HDFC Bank's FII holding fell 2.18 percentage points to 41.82%, Axis Bank dropped 2.09 points to 42.05%, and ICICI Bank eased 0.69 points to 33.79%. Federal Bank was the lone exception, with FII ownership rising 1.66 points to 27.71%. The repositioning comes even as the Nifty gained 16% in July (as of July 1). The divergence suggests near-term foreign sentiment toward the banking sector has weakened, despite a broader market rebound.
