More than one-third of Ethereum's total supply is now committed to staking, pushing the network's staking ratio to a record 34.4%.
Ethereum switched from proof-of-work to proof-of-stake on September 15, 2022, in the upgrade known as the Merge. The change replaced miners with validators, who secure the network by locking up ETH as collateral. Since then, ETH deposited into staking contracts has risen steadily, culminating in today's nearly three-year buildup to the 34.4% milestone.
Liquid staking has been a major driver. Services such as Lido let holders stake ETH while receiving a liquid token in return, allowing them to pursue staking rewards without giving up access to their capital. Under the original model, staking required a minimum of 32 ETH and effectively removed those funds from other uses. Liquid staking reduced the practical barrier to entry to near zero, broadening participation among retail users and institutions.
A higher staking ratio also reshapes supply dynamics. Staked ETH is not sitting on exchanges ready to be sold; it is tied up in securing the network and earning rewards. While total ETH supply does not typically swing sharply day to day, the portion readily available for trading shrinks as more ETH is staked.
Security strengthens as participation rises. More validators generally means more distributed consensus, raising the difficulty and cost of attacking the network as the staking share increases.
For investors, the next questions center on how far the ratio can climb and what trade-offs emerge. Many proof-of-stake networks maintain staking ratios above 50%, with some exceeding 70%. At the same time, heavy reliance on a small set of liquid staking providers could concentrate risk and weaken decentralization. Ethereum's community has discussed potential limits on staking participation in response to these concerns.
