ECB's Pontes DLT Ecosystem to Go Live on Sept. 21

AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
The ECB's "Pontes" DLT ecosystem is scheduled to launch on Sept. 21, enabling tokenization and wholesale-market settlement using either central-bank cash tokens or the existing T2 RTGS rail. Named operators (e.g., Clearstream, SWIAT) signal institutional readiness and could accelerate European adoption of tokenized assets. While supportive for market infrastructure modernization, the ECB highlights risks around fragmentation, monetary anchoring, and external dependencies.

The European Central Bank's "Pontes" distributed ledger ecosystem is scheduled to launch on September 21, according to Crowdfund Insider, as cited by ChainThink. Built on the Eurosystem's DLT platform, Pontes will provide distributed ledger services for Europe's wholesale markets, including asset tokenization. Under the setup, participants will be able to settle transactions either with cash tokens or via the Eurosystem's existing real-time gross settlement system, T2. The published roster of operators includes Clearstream, SWIAT, Cashlink, and Axiology, with additional institutions still awaiting registration. The ECB's Governing Council approved the initiative in 2025 under a two-track strategy: the short-term "Pontes" solution, which includes a pilot phase, and the long-term "Appia" framework. ECB Executive Board member Piero Cipollone said tokenized assets are poised to become a core pillar of a new digital financial ecosystem, while also warning of risks including market fragmentation, weakened monetary anchoring, and greater external dependency. Pontes is designed to make tokenized transactions settled in central bank money operational, while Appia is positioned to advance the public-private partnership roadmap.
