BNY Mellon Teams Up With Galaxy to Add Institutional Crypto Staking to Its Custody Platform

BNY Mellon is bringing crypto staking to its Digital Asset Custody platform through a new partnership with Galaxy Digital, expanding the tools it offers institutional clients to participate in proof-of-stake (PoS) networks. Under the agreement announced Tuesday, Galaxy will serve as a design partner, helping BNY integrate staking into its broader servicing model. Eligible institutional clients will be able to access staking alongside existing back-office functions, including custody, fund accounting, tax reporting, payments and client reporting where applicable. The companies said they plan to deliver custody and staking as a unified offering. BNY Mellon will provide custody infrastructure and governance, while Galaxy contributes operational expertise across PoS networks. The aim is to offer a secure, seamless staking experience that institutions can adopt through familiar custodial workflows, without giving up the operational controls and asset protections associated with BNY's custody model. "As digital assets continue to evolve, clients want more than safekeeping alone — they want a broader set of capabilities delivered through an institutionalgrade model," said Carolyn Weinberg, Chief Product and Innovation Officer at BNY Mellon. She described Galaxy as an early client of BNY's Digital Asset Custody platform and said the partnership aligns with BNY's strategy to expand digital-asset capabilities while maintaining governance, controls and resiliency. Steve Kurz, Global Co-Head of Digital Assets at Galaxy, positioned the initiative as part of a wider shift toward programmable financial rails. "Galaxy has spent years building the institutionalgrade infrastructure to drive that shift, including staking. Our collaboration with BNY brings that work into a framework the world's largest institutions can trust," he said. Staking involves locking tokens to help validate transactions and secure a PoS blockchain in exchange for rewards, typically expressed as an annualized percentage yield. By adding staking to its custody offering, BNY Mellon is moving ahead of many traditional banking peers and reinforcing its role as a key institutional player in crypto infrastructure.
