BitMEX will fully shut down on September 23, 2026, highlighting ongoing competitive consolidation among centralized crypto derivatives venues. While the closure is dated and not tied to a solvency event, it may still influence perceptions of platform longevity, counterparty risk management, and venue selection for leveraged trading. Any migration of perpetual swap liquidity could marginally affect derivatives depth and funding dynamics across major pairs.

BitMEX said it will fully wind down and shut its cryptocurrency exchange platform on Sept. 23, 2026, at 04:00 UTC.
CEO Peter Wilkinson said the exchange has operated for more than 11 years without any customer funds being lost to hacks. He acknowledged BitMEX fell behind rivals after staying concentrated for years on crypto derivatives, delaying the rollout of spot trading, yield products, custody services and stablecoin markets. BitMEX only entered USDT trading in late 2021, he added.
Wilkinson also highlighted BitMEX's role in helping its founding team pioneer the perpetual swap, which has since become one of the most actively traded instruments in crypto and a core tool for leveraged trading. (Bitcoin.com News)
