UN FAO says world food prices climbed to highest level in nearly four years in September
AI مارکیٹ کا خلاصہ
FAO's Food Price Index rose to a near four-year high as El Nino risks lifted sugar and Black Sea disruptions tightened wheat and broader logistics. Rising food and energy-linked input costs can reprice agricultural commodity risk premia and raise inflation sensitivity for import-dependent economies. While 2026 cereal output remains historically strong, lower projected 2026/27 grain trade underscores near-term supply chain fragility.

FAO data show international sugar prices rose to an 18-month high in September on concerns over an El Nino weather pattern. Wheat futures also briefly hit a three-year peak early last month after Black Sea trade was disrupted. FAO kept its 2026 global cereal production forecast at 2.979 billion metric tons, down 2.1% from the prior year’s peak but still the second-largest harvest on record. It also lowered its 2026/27 global cereal trade forecast by 0.7% from September due to constrained Black Sea shipping routes.
