On October 1, 2026, the Ethereum Foundation and the Open Anonymity Project launched zkAPI on Ethereum mainnet, enabling users to pay metered API fees without revealing their identity. Users can deposit credits such as ETH or USDC into an on-chain vault contract in a single transaction. Spending is authorized with Groth16 proofs on the BN254 curve, using Poseidon hash commitments and a nullifier to prevent double-spends. Payment notes are tracked in a 32-level Merkle tree.
