Yen holds near 156.85 per dollar after BOJ lifts rates to 1.25% and intervention risks linger
After the Bank of Japan raised its policy rate to a 31-year high of 1.25%, the yen stayed near 156.85 per dollar and posted a 2% weekly drop last week. Markets said the hike lacked clearly hawkish guidance, limiting support for the currency, while the possibility of official intervention helped curb expectations of further weakening. U.S. regulatory data showed speculators’ net long yen positions rose to $9.7 billion in the week to Sept. 15, the highest since July 2025.

Oil prices fall to an 11-day low as markets eye US-Iran diplomacy and a rebound in Saudi exports
Oil prices fell to an 11-day low on Monday as investors looked to this week’s United Nations meeting for possible diplomatic movement related to the Iran war and watched a partial recovery in Saudi crude exports. Brent’s November contract slid 2% to $101.75 a barrel, while WTI’s October contract fell 2% to $98.34. Analysts pointed to a sharp shift in Saudi flows, with satellite data showing an average of 2.9 million bpd moving through the Strait of Hormuz over the past six days, compared with 700,000 bpd in August.
